Quick summary

Type of medicine

Gastrointestinal (GI) medicine

Works by

Gaviscon works by forming a foam-like layer on top of the stomach’s contents, preventing acid from rising into the oesophagus. This is made possible by its key ingredient, sodium alginate, which reacts with stomach acid to create a protective barrier. At the same time, antacids such as calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate neutralise excess acid, providing further relief from burning sensations and discomfort. Unlike some traditional antacids, Gaviscon doesn’t just neutralise stomach acid - it actively prevents reflux, offering longer-lasting protection.

For optimal results, chew 2 to 4 tablets thoroughly after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day, or as directed by your doctor. After chewing, it's beneficial to follow with half a glass of water or another liquid. Avoid swallowing the tablets whole, as chewing ensures the active ingredients are properly released to act effectively. Do not exceed 16 tablets in a 24-hour period.
